Campus Government Wants In-State Tuition For Undocumented Students

University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s student government has called for in-state tuition for undocumented students who graduated from a high school in the state.

The vote, taken in May, aims to support a pending bill in the state legislature that is not expected to pass North Carolina’s conservative-dominated house.

Nevertheless, the student resolution sailed through on a 21-5 vote, with 2 abstentions, according to Ben Smith, a College Fix contributor and UNC Chapel Hill student who is interning this summer at Young America’s Foundation.

Smith reports for YAF that after emotional, tear-filled testimony by undocumented residents, the student resolution passed.

What’s more, one student government representative felt too intimidated to voice concern over the resolution due to the presence of a mix of radical leftist campus groups, Smith reported.

Smith argued against the measure in his piece:

This resolution is bad for several reasons, but the first being that it is against the law.

… In addition, despite many of the others who have gone through the long, expensive process of becoming naturalized, all the student needs to do is apply to a university. Knowing the liberal atmosphere on many campuses, their acceptance is all but guaranteed. This will only encourage more illegal immigration.

The resolution should not have been passed and simply gives weight and the prestige of UNC Chapel Hill behind a failed and doomed bill.
