Trustees of Loyola Marymount University voted to remove coverage for abortion under the university’s health plan on Monday.
The university, a Jesuit Catholic institution, has been embroiled in controversy over the issue for weeks.
Pro-life members of the faculty and administration have been fighting to end abortion coverage, saying it is inconsistent with Catholic doctrine.
“Part of the university’s mission is to promote justice,” Professor Christopher Kaczor told the New York Times. “And in the Catholic tradition, abortion is considered a justice issue. So to say the university supports justice and then also pay for abortions is a contradiction.”
However, the trustees’ decision to end abortion coverage was only a partial victory on behalf of the unborn because the university will still provide assistance to help employees find elective abortion services, although it won’t actually pay for the abortions. The school is calling it a compromise.
Professor Kaczor told CBS News he was happy about the decision to end abortion funding, but disappointed about the trustee’s decision to continue to help employees carry out self-funded abortions.
“The decision basically is something like this: we think abortion is intrinsically evil and wrong so we’re not going to drive you there, but let me arrange for my brother to take you there if you give him a couple bucks he’ll take care of you,” he told CBS. “Well that doesn’t really make sense. If abortion is really seriously wrong you don’t arrange for someone else to facilitate it. And that’s exactly what LMU did.”
