Valedictorian Shot and Killed by Catholic University Police Officer

Robert Cameron Redus, a senior at the University of the Incarnate Word, a Catholic institution located in Texas, was shot and killed during an encounter with campus police. Redus was on the Dean’s list and was class valedictorian in High School. Law enforcement officials are investigating the circumstances behind the fatal shooting.

Fox News reports:

[Redus] was reportedly driving his Ford Ranger erratically and speeding at about 2:30 a.m. Friday morning, according to The San Antonio Express-News, citing Alamo Heights Police Lt. Cindy Pruitt.

Cpl. Christopher J. Carter, of the University of the Incarnate Word Police, reportedly ordered Redus to pull over, and both vehicles pulled into the parking lot of the off-campus apartment complex where Redus lived. Pruitt told The Express-News both men got out of their vehicles at some point, and became embroiled in a struggle that prompted Carter to radio his colleagues for help.

Witnesses reportedly said they heard four to eight shots fired during the encounter between Carter and Redus, who was on the dean’s list at the university and a valedictorian of his high school class who was due to graduate in May.

Redus was pronounced dead at the scene.

It is common for large U.S. universities maintain their own official police force. However, official doctrine of the Roman Catholic church encourages “great restraint” in the use of governmental force.

The shooting at University of the Incarnate Word follows on the heels of another fatal shooting of a student by campus police at a religious university. Earlier this year, an officer on the university police force police officer at Liberty University in Virginia shot and killed a 19-year-old student who was allegedly wielding a sledge hammer as a weapon.
