Student Civil-Liberties Group Celebrates 15th Anniversary With New York City Gala

Much of the coordinated work to defend the rights of students and faculty on increasingly intolerant college campuses sprung from the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education‘s founding in 1999.

The group is celebrating its 15th anniversary at a New York City gala Oct. 23.

It will feature the influential First Amendment lawyer Floyd Abrams, also a professor at Columbia’s journalism school and the namesake of Yale’s Institute for Freedom of Expression. Harvard professor and linguist Steven Pinker, whose books include The Better Angels of Our Nature: Why Violence Has Declined and who chairs the usage panel of the American Heritage Dictionary, is also speaking.

The gala will also feature “some of the many students helped by our work,” FIRE said. Registration is online.
