NJ teacher suspended after class sends ‘get well’ cards to cop killer

Third grade teacher Marylin Zuniga apparently thought it was a good idea to have her class write “get well” notes to well-known convicted cop killer Mumia Abu-Jamal.

Zuniga had Johanna Fernandez, a history professor at Baruch College, deliver the letters.

“Just dropped off these letters to comrade Johanna Fernandez. My 3rd graders wrote to Mumia to lift up his spirits as he is ill. #freemumia,” Zuniga tweeted shortly after her delivery.

“Comrade,” eh? Isn’t that sweet.

Officials at Forest Street School deny any prior knowledge of Zuniga’s “lesson plan,” and say the teacher’s activity was “unauthorized.” She has been suspended from her classroom duties for the nonce.

MyFoxPhilly.com reports:

Fernandez says Mumia appreciated the public school children’s letters.

“It had been a long time since we had seen Mumia smile. He chuckled as he read excerpts from these touching letters,” she writes.

The former death row inmate was rushed to a hospital in March to be treated for complications from diabetes.

Richard Costello, political coordinator for the Philadelphia Fraternal Order of Police, called the letters alarming and outrageous on Fox News, adding all the teachers involved should be fired.

‘Furthermore all the parents who have children in that school system need to reevaluate that involvement, because these children are now placed in danger by the very people charged with their education,’ Costello said.

“The situation Mumia was in yesterday morning was a near-death experience,” said Johanna Fernandez, an Abu-Jamal supporter and history professor at Baruch College. “So we want to know: How is it that the prison system allowed this condition to deteriorate in such a way?”

Mumia is serving a life sentence for the 1981 murder of Philly police officer Daniel Faulkner. He has achieved cult-like status among the far-left where he’s viewed as a victim of the “racist” American judicial system.
