Frat and sorority accused of racism for Kim-and-Kanye themed party

One of the most famous couples in American pop culture is apparently off-limits as a theme for costume parties.

The Daily Bruin reports that UCLA’s Sigma Phi Epsilon and Alpha Phi hosted a “Kanye Western” party where “guests dressed in baggy clothes, plumped lips and padded bottoms, or as ‘Kardashians.'”

The paper said “several UCLA student groups are asking the university to respond” amid reports that some partygoers were wearing blackface, though several commenters on the story said they had seen no blackface in pics the Daily found.

The Afrikan Student Union was scheduled to meet today to “address what it described as a racial incident,” the Los Angeles Times reports:

Alicia Frison, a student union member, told The Times a student notified her and other members about the party Tuesday night after photographing some female partygoers who wearing gold and had soot on their faces. Other female partygoers wore large fake butts and were balancing water bottles like Kim Kardashian did for her infamous Paper magazine photoshoot.

The school has already implicitly sided with the protesters, releasing a statement saying that while it’s investigating, students shouldn’t celebrate pop culture in ways that “can cause harm and pain” to others in the community, the Times said.

Sigma Phi’s national’s office has suspended activities at the frat while investigating, and Alpha Phi’s social activities have been “temporarily suspended as well.”
