California grants state financial aid for illegal immigrants

by College Fix Staff on October 10, 2011

Illegal immigrants may now receive California state financial aid after Gov. Jerry Brown signed into law the second part of the California DREAM Act.

The new law provides financial aid in the form of community college district fee waivers, institutional aid from the University of California and California State systems, and access to Cal Grants (which students do not need to pay back) for eligible undocumented residents. The law gives California illegal immigrants the most access to higher ed financing in the country.

A State Senate report estimated the annual cost of the bill to be around $40 million. (The fiscal impact for the 2013-14 school year would be $13 million in Cal Grants, $7.5 to $15 million in fee waivers, and $11.4 to $12.2 million in institutional aid.)

Brown has overseen cumulative cuts of approximately $1.4 billion to the California higher education and community college systems.

And they want the rest of the USA to bail them out. Let Mexico have them

If California wants to provide free services to Illegal Immigrants, why don’t they just cut the filing fees for status change. Atleast once they are Americans we can make them pay taxes too.

I Have to say as a mother of three children in college that this really makes me angry.

We are your typical middle class family that are citizens of the United States and do not qualify for any college assistance for our children. In the last four years tuition has more than doubled in the Cal State system, which part of this going to financial aid in which I cannot qualify for and there are many impacted schools so it is difficult to get in no matter what your grade point average in high school. One of my son’s had a 3.8 GPA and got turned down by two of the four schools applied to. Now we are adding in(and CA is broke?) another countries population to support. We already do this in our healthcare system. Now let’s add this to our schools as well. I believe that we need to concentrate on our own citizens at this point in our economy state. Nobody stops people from becoming citizens. They need to go through the process to become a citizen and pay taxes etc like the rest of us.

So glad this law passed!!! There are so many students that want to attend colleges. This is adream come true. So sad to see students that are legal and don’t take advantage of the opportunities they have!.

i agree i know a lot of people that are us citizens and don’t take advantage at all some
never even graduated from high school and have no interest in getting a college education

And these are the people we call our representatives? Their agenda is not to help their fellow American citizen. This really irate me, and the fact that we are all paying our taxes to help the illegal immigrants!!! My brother a long with other people is struggling to get his kids to college. With my niece and nephews working at the same time going to school to help their parents pay for college.
I am very irate that this governor would do such a thing to the people who put him to office – tax payers. At the time when this state – California is in debt – bankrupt, he has the nerve to take care of the illegal immigrants!!!

FOR EVERY ILLEGAL ALIEN WHO TAKES A PLACE IN OUR COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES, THERE IS AN AMERICAN STUDENT WHO HAS LOST “HIS” OR “HER” EDUCATION. THERE ARE NOT AN INFINITE AMOUNT OF PLACES, JUST A LIMITED AMOUNT. THEY TELL US NOT TO PUNISH THE CHILDREN OF THE ILLEGALS’ FOR THEIR PARENTS’ CRIMES. BUT WE SURE AS H— MUST NOT REWARD THEM FOR THEIR PARENTS’ CRIMES. (MEXICO, I UNDERSTAND, GIVES A FREE COLLEGE EDUCATION FOR ANYONE OF MEXICAN DESCENT ANYWAY!) THEY ARE NOT OUR RESPONSIBILITY – AMERICAN CHILDREN ARE!!!!! WHICH COUNTRY IS JERRY BROWN WORKING FOR AGAIN??? SURE SOUNDS LIKE A TRAITOR TO ME.

      asshole ^

yeah an illegal that worked harder then the american to get into that university and being born to an illegal isn’t a crime and as us citizens that they are yes they are the us responsibility and deserve the same opportunities as all other us citizens because they will become tax payers just like your your kids will and fyi mexico doesn’t give free education the parents have to pay for everything begging with crayons in preschool

What is it about the word illegal that Jerry Brown does not understand? I myself am an immigrant but I took the lawful route to become a citizen of the United States. Why can’t they make these illegals fall in line and pay taxes like the rest of us did instead of spending tax payers money to put them thru school? I had to break my back to get accepted to a University and had to prove myself. There are citizens of the United States that can use financial aid to get thru school and there are teachers that could use higher salaries. What the hell does Jerry Brown think he’s doing?

    • t

as immigrant you more then anyone should know that illegals do pay taxes they work hard and get just as much money if not more taken out of their paychecks money that they will never get back because unlike us citizens they don’t get a check every month once they turn 40

What is it about the word illegal does Jerry Brown, and all the supporters of this law do not understand?!!! I myself am an immigrant who took the legal route to become a lawful citizen. I waited years to finally be granted citizenship. I waited in line and paid taxes like I should. Why can’t these ‘undocumented’ individuals do the same? Why have they lived here most of their lives and remained illegal? That means they have been taking advantage of tax payers’ money without contributing themselves! This is simply unfair to all the taxpaying citizens and a slap in the face of all those immigrants who chose to fall in line!!!
