Grad school applications rise significantly in recession

More students applied to graduate schools as the nation went into the 2008 recession, according to a report by the Council of Graduate Schools.

According to the report, which surveyed 699 higher education institutions in the United States and was released on Tuesday, applications to graduate schools rose by 8.3 percent between fall 2008 and fall 2009. That number is nearly double the average annual increase of 4.8 percent during the past decade.

A preliminary report issued Aug. 19 found applications to graduate schools rose even higher — by 9 percent — in 2009.

Stuart Heiser, a spokesman for the council, said graduate school applications have historically increased during recessions. After the dot-com bubble burst, graduate schools in the U.S. saw applications increase by 6 percent in 2001 and 13 percent in 2002.

Graduate program coordinator Barry Levitch said the UT electrical and computer engineering program had a 10-percent increase in applications in 2008. He said applications rose by 20 percent in 2009.
