NYU to offer new emergency contraception pill

By the end of the year, the NYU Student Health Center will begin providing the new emergency contraception pill, Ella, to students.

Unlike Plan B and Next Choice, the two existing forms of emergency contraceptives, which are only effective up to 72 hours after unprotected sex, Ella can be effectively used up to five days after unprotected sex or failed birth control.

The new drug will require a prescription, unlike Plan B and Next Choice, both of which are available over-the-counter for individuals 17 years or older.

Susan Orand, clinical manager of women’s health services at the NYU Student Health Center, said the side effects of Ella are minimal and “similar to those of currently available emergency contraceptives.”

Known as EllaOne in Europe, the contraceptive has been determined as safe and effective in clinical trials in the UK, Ireland and the U.S. Its cost will be determined once it is available on the U.S. market.
