Obama's speech at Wisconsin brings protesters of all kind

As University of Wisconsin students waited to see President Obama’s speech on Library Mall, protesters around Madison Tuesday hoped to provide a counter-rally illustrating Obama’s shortcomings as president.

The Wisconsin Network for Peace and Justice joined with other peace groups around Chadbourne Hall to protest Obama’s war policies in Afghanistan and Iraq, according to organizer and member Joy First.

First said she hoped Obama would stick true to his word and make change happen, but so far his policy is too similar to that of former President George W. Bush.

According to organizer David Williams, Obama is continuing Bush’s war policies instead of following his promise to end the wars.

“Obama is basically Bush light,” Williams said. “We think Obama got a lot of support from students, and I think he’s disappointing them. We want him to go in more of a progressive direction.”

Williams and other protest attendees also advocated college students today becoming more involved in politics. […]

College Republicans also worked at Chadbourne Tuesday to provide literature and a positive message for Republican candidates, according to chair Stephen Duerst.

College Republicans member and UW senior Sean Rao added they plan to expand their campaigns by becoming more active around campus.

“We hope the students will be educated with the literature,“ Duerst said. “And we want to show there are Republicans on campus. I don’t think Madison is as liberal as it seems.”
