Indoctrinating elementary school students

One of the few concrete policy ideas proposed by President Obama in his State of the Union address was that all 50 states would require kids to stay in school until they graduate, or turn 18. But given Big Government’s failings in the classroom, many parents might question why it should be even more involved in their children’s education.

A recent assignment indoctrinating Utica 6th graders in green propaganda (see nearby) provides a good example as to why.

The Ebeling Elementary class was asked to write a response to a brief essay on environmental sustainability. A line from the essay about Obama’s future energy plans suggests that it was written before the 2008 presidential election – but no author is given. But that is the least of its problems.

The essay treats as fact several climate change and sustainability claims that are ill-phrased conjectures, at best. The thesis statement contains this unfounded gem: “The best way to increase our supply of energy is to be more efficient.” One concerned parent noted that students weren’t being asked to debate the points made in the essay, or respond in a critical way. Rather, they were simply answering a question about the text, and accepting every word in it as indisputable.

Worse, this dogma-disguised-as-learning contains numerous grammatical errors.

Several phrases and sentences are repeated. Obama’s first name is misspelled. Those are serious offenses, considering the attached grading rhubric instructs students to use proper spelling and grammar. Parents deserve an explanation from administrators at Ebeling Elementary –and who is responsible.

Sadly, incidents like this one happen every day, all over the country. That’s because the American public education system suffers from monotheistic Leftism, bureaucratic neglect, and incompetent teachers. Imprisoning students in their classrooms until they reach adulthood, as Obama proposed Tuesday night, won’t solve those problems.

As coincidence would have it this is school choice week. Clearly, Utica, Michigan – and America – can use more of it.
