Here’s a pair of Saudi Arabian-related higher education stories:
The Saudi Arabian government announced that women will now be permitted to take political science classes at universities, a right specifically denied to them until yesterday. Thumbs up.
A Canadian university arts student came under criticism from the Saudi Education Centre in Kamloops for displaying a photograph he took of an Islamic woman, dressed in the hijab, holding up a bra. The artist claims the photo is up to individual interpretation. A Thompson Rivers University official initially ripped the photo down, but the university apologized and restored its place in the art gallery. Saudi officials, however, found it offensive and wanted it permanently censored.
“The artist didn’t approach the artwork let’s say in a very professional way that can state and can clarify the information and clarify the idea behind the picture,” said centre president Trad Bahabri.
Bahabri said he thinks text explaining the photo’s meaning is needed.
“I’m pretty sure many people misinterpret and many people misunderstand it. I can guarantee that,” he said.
