Beware “The Threateners.”
This group of anonymous people has claimed responsibility for making some of the bomb threats against the University of Pittsburgh. In e-mails to the campus newspaper, the Threateners said they would stop making threats if the university agreed to drop the reward it was offering for information on the bomb threats. From The Chronicle of Higher Education:
The first explanatory e-mail from “The Threateners”—addressed to Pitt’s chancellor, Mark A. Nordenberg, and sent to the student newspaper on Friday—offered to stop the threats if the university dropped its reward.
“Simply withdraw the ‘reward,’ and we will end our actions permanently,” the e-mail said.
Campus officials were wary. “The university was urged to avoid any form of negotiation with anonymous correspondents claiming responsibility for the criminal acts,” Robert Hill, vice chancellor for public affairs, said in a written statement on Friday.
But the Threateners’ second e-mail said that because the university had withdrawn its reward, the group would cease its bomb-threat campaign.
“The university authorities at Pitt have withdrawn the $50,000 reward they offered, and, as our only demand has been met, our campaign is over,” the message said.
