North Dakota Voters Axe “Fighting Sioux” Nickname

Voters have had their say, and the University of North Dakota will no longer using “the Fighting Sioux” as its moniker for sports teams. The Chronicle of Higher Education reported early Wednesday morning that a clear majority favored retiring the nickname.

The NCAA had threatened to impose penalties on the university if it did not stop using “the Fighting Sioux,” a nickname that the organization finds offensive to Native Americans. Many Native Americans, however, support keeping the nickname.
