Prof ‘Wishes Sons Away’ In Wake of Zimmerman Verdict

Tulane University political science professor Melissa Harris-Perry, who hosts a show on MSNBC, said after the George Zimmerman not-guilty verdict that she wished she didn’t have sons because they’re not safe in America, an apparent long-held belief of hers.

“Harris-Perry recalled the ‘relief’ she felt when she learned years ago that she’d be having a daughter–despite her concerns, as a sexual assault survivor, about raising a girl in a world plagued by sexual violence,” MSNBC reported.

“Last night, I thought, ‘I live in a country that makes me wish my sons away. Wish that they don’t exist, because it’s not safe,” Harris-Perry said during her Sunday show, dedicated to “how parents–particularly African-American parents–should talk to their children about the ‘not guilty’ verdict in the George Zimmerman trial, and its broader meaning.”
