Georgia governor vetoes ‘campus carry’ bill that barely lets you carry anywhere

Who knew Republicans were so afraid of R.E.M. frontman Michael Stipe?

Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal, a Republican on the outs with his conservative constituents on social issues (see religious freedom), has vetoed a bill that would let college students carry their lawfully permitted concealed weapons around some parts of of campus.

The Red & Black reports the bill, approved by the Republican-led Legislature, was full of exceptions: Students couldn’t carry in their dorms, Greek houses or sporting venues. Plus, it only applied to students 21 and older with a concealed carry permit.

Get a load of these opposition leaders:

Hank Huckaby, chancellor of the University System of Georgia

Jere Morehead, University of Georgia president

“notable UGA alumnus” Titus Burgess, best known for the TV shows Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and 30 Rock

“former student and R.E.M band member Michael Stipe,” who famously pulled off an unending litany of lefty T-shirts on stage at the 1991 MTV Video Music Awards.
