$57,000 unused by William & Mary counseling center after suicides

Last year, the SA allocated $57,000 to the Counseling Center for the hiring of a mental health counselor. The allocation was in response to two student suicides during the spring semester. It was largest one-time allocation in the SA’s history.

But as of September 5, two weeks into the school year, a mental health counselor has not been hired. The bill that approved the allocation specifically stated the position was for “the coming year.”

As wait times at the counseling center have increased over the last year and this position remain unfilled, fingers have begun pointing at Counseling Center administrators. “I think it’s unbelievable that they have so much money for this position and haven’t hired somebody,” said Malin Adams ’13.

The Counseling Center was unavailable for comment.

Student body president Chrissy Scott ’11 was aware that no one had been hired but did not know why. Jessee Vasold ’11, who ran for student body president last year and is the current Secretary of Health and Safety blamed the delay on “the search process.”

“It’s understandable that the Counseling Center hasn’t hired someone yet. The search process [to fill positions] at the college is lengthy. They’re doing the best they can I’m sure,” Vasold added.

Undersecretary for Mental Health Ryann Panap met with Director of Counseling Center Dr. Warrenetta Mann on Friday, Sept. 3. The hiring was not discussed due to the immediacy of other issues.
