Teacher who did cartwheel in class spared sex offender rap

An Oklahoma junior high school substitute teacher who tried to do a cartwheel in class has avoided a sex offender label.

Lacey Sponsler originally was arrested on an indecency charge after her attempted acrobatics at Pawhuska Junior High School revealed she wasn’t wearing any underwear.

A student had posted a snippet of the, er, event on Snapchat.

According to the New York Post, Sponsler escaped having to register as a sex offender by pleading guilty to felony assault instead of indecent exposure.

From the story:

Police said she had been wearing a long dress with no underwear when she attempted the stunt, thus flashing her genitals to the class.

A police report indicated Sponsler initially denied the incident, claiming she did not remember cartwheeling and instead was “dancing with students” and “trying to be a cool teacher.”

Her attorney, Nathan Milner, told ABC8 he believes the ordeal was blown out of proportion.

“Anything that happens at school or when kids are around are going to be blown out of proportion,” Milner said. “I think that’s why we got the disposition we got today.”

While Sponsler is free to go home, she leaves with a two-year suspended sentence and a temporary ban from teaching. She also faces a $200 fine.

The student who shot the video told police that Sponsler informed the (choir) class that she wasn’t wearing any underwear, and had also discussed using drugs and how she “thought 14 year-old boys were like men.”
