Earlier this week a protest against “racism and hate” engulfed Michigan’s small Albion College after an email from the campus Republicans came to light.
Approximately 100 students took to campus grounds holding signs, dancing, and blocking access to the cafeteria in response to the email, which included talking points from a Ben Shapiro YouTube video, MLive.com reports.
These talking points included:
–“Statistical disparity does NOT mean discrimination.”
–“The only color that capitalism cares about is green. Not black, white or what have you.”
–“Capitalism kills discrimination on the basis that when a business decides to discriminate, he/she/they lose good employees, business and put themselves at a disadvantage on the marketplace.”
–“More white people die at the hands of police offers than black people do.”
–“Things need to change inside the black community if (poverty) statistics are going to change.”
–“Trayvon Martin was on top of George Zimmerman slamming his head into the ground, resulting in the shooting and death of Trayvon Martin.”
–“Liberals will make up their own subjective truths to their own convenience to prove you wrong. Their personal truths are not THE truth. There is only the truth and bullshit.”
The last paragraph, however, caused the biggest stir:
“Take the liberal tears from the idiot you just destroyed in your debate, dissemble your American made Springfield M1911 .45 caliber handgun and apply the tears in order to clean the mechanism, reassemble and proceed to purchase Antifa and ISIS hunting permits and max out on tags.”
The College Republicans disavowed that statement, but not the rest of the email. Albion has begun a formal investigation of the matter.
Protesting student Lorraine Smith said “[T]he question isn’t about diversity, it’s about inclusivity,” while Black Student Alliance President Khalifaziz Birden added “When this stuff happens, we have a little rally where we get together and sing Kumbaya. And nothing ever happens.”
“There’s a culture of bigotry on this campus,” Birden said. “Right now, if someone were to walk up to me and say, ‘Hey, I’m black, I’m gay and I’m disabled. Should I apply to Albion?’ I would say ‘No. Run.'”
Student demonstrators presented a list of demands to school officials, which is “almost identical” to that of two years ago:
–Faculty, staff and student leaders must receive mandatory and annual diversity training.
–An accessible system of reporting harassment and cultural insensitivities must be provided.
–The school’s office of Intercultural Affairs must be properly funded and empower students to learn more on the topic of diversity and inclusion.
–Buildings must be renovated with automated doors and ramps for those with disabilities.
–At least one floor should be designated for gender-neutral housing in each residence hall.
Surprisingly, there was no demand to change the college’s incredibly Eurocentric mascot, the “Briton.”
Less than 1,400 attend Albion where the total cost of attendance is over $52,000.
