Student activists invade Winston Churchill-themed café, scream he ‘was a racist’

This past Saturday, several student activists crashed a Winston Churchill-themed café in London to denounce the former prime minister as a “racist.”

RT reports that once inside Finsbury Park’s Blighty UK café, the protesters chanted “Churchill was a racist,” “You will never make colonialism palatable,” and one protester adding “We cannot accept the unashamed colonial and gentrifying presence of this cafe.”

The activists urged café patrons to boycott the establishment and demanded an apology from Blighty’s owner for the “poorly thought and insensitive branding,” according to The Mirror.

The Times reports the demonstrators were led by the University of London’s School of Oriental and African Studies students’ union.

More from The Mirror report:

Footage captured from the demonstration showed activists sang: ‘”It is our duty to fight for our freedom” and “We have nothing to lose but our chains”. …

Then Halimo Hussein, the co-president of Equality and Liberation at SOAS, University of London student union, said: “To the owner of the cafe, apologise to the local community for their poorly thought and insensitive branding and promptly change it from the menu to the aesthetics and décor of the cafe”.

Ms Hussein is said to be a staunch supporter of the Labour Party and Jeremy Corbyn and is pictured on Facebook with Russell Brand, another fan of the leader.

Another female protester proclaims: “To the customer, we ask you that you boycott this cafe until they take the concerns of the community seriously”.

Activists reeled off chants that included “It is our duty to win” and “We must love and support each other”.

As they trooped out, a customer told the activists: “Churchill fought for our freedom”, to which the group replied: “Churchill was a racist”.

Owner Chris Evans, 47, called police who attended and said he would make a further report after his staff were left “frightened”.

Mr Evans said: “I have already invited these people in for coffee to discuss their concerns.

“Instead, they have come in and shouted at my customers. My staff have been left frightened and so I am reporting the incident to the police today.

Evans added that he had to remove a portrait of the World War II leader after it was vandalized with the epithets “scum,” “warmonger,” and “imperialist.”

The café has been vandalized before and Labour Party activists have started a petition demanding it drop its Churchill theme.
