Pro-Palestianian students occupy university building over divestment vote

‘Sit-in’ lasted a few hours

Pro-Palestinian students at George Washington University hosted a brief sit-in yesterday at a university administration building in order to protest the cancellation of a “divestment” vote at the student senate.

The students, numbering “about 30,” according to The GW Hatchet, “occupied” a small portion of the Marvin Center for a brief time on Monday night and into Tuesday morning. The sit-in was meant to protest “the cancellation of a highly anticipated Student Association Senate debate about a pro-Palestinian divestment resolution.”

That resolution would have mandated the university “divest from nine companies supporters said profited from Palestinian suffering,” The Hatchett reported.

According to a Facebook post from the university’s Student Association, the meeting was cancelled due to “significant security concerns for both students and Senators.” Repeated requests to the university’s police department for added security apparently went unheeded.

The Hatchet reported that the pro-Palestinian group Divest This Time GW live-streamed the brief sit-in. The livestream of the event was not immediately available on the group’s Facebook page. The group did, however, post a statement on the page calling the sit-in “successful” in that it allegedly led to the rescheduling of the cancelled divestment vote.

“Palestinians and pro-Palestine organizers, through their efforts during the sit-in, have had a significant impact on this outcome, and their efforts must be commended,” the statement reads, in part.
