Students offended that professor tried to help females by boosting their grades

It’s not just the administration at the University of Akron that had a problem with Liping Liu’s plan to give his female students higher grades, a story The College Fix broke.

Students told Fox 8 Cleveland they were offended that the professor did so in a bid to increase the number of women in his field of information sciences:

“I guess you could say it’s a noble thing to do, like you want to incorporate more women into the field however, at the same time it’s completely unacceptable and no professor should,” said Samiyyah Ceasor, a senior majoring in Psychology. …

Michalla Gordon, a nursing student says she almost finds the professor’s desire to increase women’s grades offensive.

“I think everything should be based on hard work and I don’t think that women need a crutch to get into science,” she said.

“I don’t think that there should be any boost or help with that because it’s just showing that we need help which I don’t think we do,” Gordon continued.

The public university has nine female students in its 68-student information systems major this spring, a slightly lower percentage than women in its 484-student computer information systems major, according to Fox 8.

In addition to telling Prof. Liu to cancel his plan, the administration has also told students their grades won’t be adjusted as Liu’s email had informed them.
