Student forgets to bring snack to class, psych prof walks out

George Parrott, a Sacramento State psychology professor, walked out of his class last week when the student assigned to bring a group snack forgot to do so. According to The Sacramento Bee, Parrott warns his students at the start of each semester that someone must provide a snack each day of class. He also recommends snacks that are originally prepared, rather than pre-packaged or processed:

He said the snack obligation is his way of encouraging students to work collectively. It connects students who might not otherwise interact on a commuter campus, said the professor.

“Having these goodies in the class breaks down some of the formality and some of the rigidity in the class, which is one of the most stressful for students,” Parrott said.

Parrott’s purposeful absence annoyed some of his students, who had expected a review session for an upcoming examination. The university is investigating the incident.
