The Michigan Primary: Romnewtorum vs. Ron Paul

The Michigan primary is shaping up to be a pivotal contest in the Republican campaign. College Fix Assistant Editor and Michigan native Robby Soave shared his thoughts on the primary in The Michigan View’s All-Star Symposium:

With Michigan poised to decide who should face President Obama in November, it’s worth mentioning that the Republican primary is a two-man race: Romnewtorum vs. Ron Paul.

The reality is that the presidencies of Mitt Romney, Newt Gingrich, and Rick Santorum would be remarkably similar. They may differ on experience, personality, and the issues they emphasize, but their actual policies — on social issues, the economy, and wars — are virtually indistinguishable. They support some bailouts, and oppose others. They criticize Obama’s foreign policy, but fervently support his costly military interventions. And while they are concerned about the growth of the federal government, their meager spending cuts wouldn’t put a dent in the deficit. In fact, the Washington Post reported that Romnewtorum’s policies would actually increase the debt. Paul would reduce it by $2 trillion.

Ron Paul is the only candidate who would meaningfully reduce the size and scope of the federal government, which is why he has earned the support of college-aged kids, who are about to enter the workforce in an economy wrecked by Big Government. Michigan voters will almost certainly choose Romnewtorum, but the generation that will inherit the nation’s current problems has already cast its vote for Paul.
