Voters ask Christie to focus on state, not national issues

As Gov. Chris Christie continues to gain national recognition, a recent poll shows many New Jersey voters want the governor to focus on the state rather than the country.

The poll, conducted by the Eagleton Institute of Politics at the University, asked 912 registered New Jersey voters their opinions regarding Christie’s recent nationwide tour with Republican candidates.

According to the poll, 64 percent feel Christie should stay in New Jersey while 24 percent support his tour with other party members.

In addition, of the 52 percent of voters polled who say Christie is doing a poor job in office, three-quarters believe the governor should stay in and work on the Garden State.

“The people who mostly say he should stay home are Democrats and Independents, but Republicans are much more likely to say that he should campaign for Republican candidates,” said David Redlawsk, the director of the Rutgers-Eagleton poll. “It’s a clear partisan thing.”

Redlawsk, also a University political science professor, said it is understandable Christie is touring with his Republican counterparts, but whether he will run for president in 2012 is hard to gauge at the moment.

“I think he doesn’t mind increasing his national visibility whether that would be for 2012 or not,” he said. “On the other hand, he’s become a really visible figure in the Republican Party and so any politician would want to take advantage of that.”
