Woman’s Death on Saudi Campus Sparks Outrage, Controversy

“University staff members in Saudi Arabia would not allow paramedics to immediately enter a female-only area of a campus on Wednesday to assist a student who suffered a heart attack and ultimately died,” reports The Associated Press, citing a newspaper report:

Okaz newspaper reported on Thursday that administrators impeded efforts by the male paramedics to save the student’s life at the King Saud University. The paper said staff waited an hour before allowing the paramedics to finally enter on Wednesday.

The death has since spurred thousands of online comments about the country’s strict segregation of the sexes.

The university denies the claim, saying they let medics right in.
