More Details in the Killing of FSU’s Dan Markel

Slowly, details are coming forth regarding the killing of popular Florida State law professor Dan Markel. A series of bizarre Facebook friend requests and threatening blog comments may give authorities a new angle on which to proceed. The Daily Mail (UK) reports:

Markel, 41, seemed concerned in January when he posted, ‘Is anyone else getting pestered just in the last week or so by obviously ridiculous or malevolent friend requests on fb from people with sham profiles all over the world w no possible connection to you?

‘It feels like an onslaught of the Facebook equivalent of Cialis and Nigerian prince scams.’

One friend jokingly replied, ‘It might just be all your friends creating alter egos on Ambien…?’

But others quickly chimed in that they too were getting these strange requests.

‘Yes!! What is this?’ asked a female friend in response to Markel’s question, while another said she had gotten four such requests.

According to an article in the Jewish Daily Forward, police are also reportedly investigating blog commenters who made menacing threats via Markel’s Praw[f]sblawg site and other websites to which he contributed.

One exchange in particular stands out. A commenter got personal on the defunct site insidethelawschoolscam.blogspot.com, and the Jewish professor voiced fears for his physical safety.

‘You’re worried about your home and private life being a target?’ jeered the writer who went by the handle atheistATLlawyer. ‘What about your graduate’s homes and private lives? (Or lack thereof?) YOU’VE RUINED THEIR LIVES YOU FOOL.’

In addition, a 911 dispatcher made a crucial error upon receiving the call from the neighbor who discovered Markel. The emergency call was coded as a low priority, meaning it took authorities twelve minutes to get to Markel’s home.
