UPDATE: Idiotic ‘bathroom grievance’ in UO elections dismissed by student court

Remember the “trans femme” candidate in University of Oregon student elections who tried to get an entire competing slate taken off the ballot for offending xe/xem/hyr/they/them/their delicate sensibilities?

Well, the student Constitutional Court thought it was just as stupid as we did.

In an update to its original timeline of the complaint, the Daily Emerald notes the court overturned sanctions Thursday against the We Are Oregon slate for hosting its kickoff in a building without a gender-neutral bathroom:

“While this Court is empathetic towards Respondent’s original grievance, and advises all future campaigns to remember their cultural competency trainings in order to promote as inclusive a community as possible, access to a bathroom is not a campaign related purpose.”

However, the full court didn’t rule on the trans student’s “misgendering” claim – being accidentally referred to as “Ms.” by the opposing campaign manager – leading two members to dissent and say the court should make clear this was a stupid complaint:

“Sexual harassment is a very great evil, but the record supports the conclusion that only a single unintentional gender-based microagression occurred. To conflate the two may serve to salve the sense of anger Respondent may feel at Petitioner’s mistake. However it may serve Respondent, it is unnecessarily inflammatory and risks damaging the reputation of Petitioner, an ASUO member who the record shows made a mistake, and then took the first opportunity to apologize.”
