BUSTED: Syracuse basketball, coach Jim Boeheim sanctioned by NCAA

A 94-page report released today by the NCAA lays out what has transpired with Syracuse’s Orangemen basketball team under legendary coach Jim Boeheim.

The organization’s infractions include forged classwork, players receiving cash for appearances, and violations of university drug policy.

The investigations, which continued for almost eight years, revealed Syracuse’s violations stretch back more than a decade.

The New York Times reports:

The N.C.A.A. assessed Syracuse as having a lack of institutional control over its athletic program — a swift and stunning rebuke that is sure to shake up a bedrock program in Central New York, home of the largest on-campus basketball arena in the country, the Carrier Dome.

More than 100 victories are expected to be vacated by the 70-year-old Boeheim, whose 966 victories to date ranked him second behind Duke’s Mike Krzyzewski. The Syracuse men’s basketball team, which already self-imposed a postseason ban this season in anticipation of the N.C.A.A.’s ruling, will also lose 12 scholarships over the next four years.

“Over the course of a decade, Syracuse University did not control and monitor its athletics programs,” wrote the Division I Committee on Infractions in announcing the report, “and its head men’s basketball coach failed to monitor his program, according to a decision issued by a Division I Committee on Infractions panel.”

Other sanctions included a reduction of permissible off-campus recruiters from four to two; a return of all funds received through revenue sharing from participation in the N.C.A.A. tournament in 2011, 2012 and 2013; and a suspension of Boeheim for the first nine games of the 2015-16 Atlantic Coast Conference schedule.

Syracuse’s The Daily Orange is reporting that Boeheim is “one of the few to dispute the [NCAA] allegations.”

Coach Boeheim was elected to the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2005, and has a NCAA Division I record of 35 straight 20-win seasons.
