Gov. Rick Scott to UF: It’s time to tighten your belt

A broken air conditioning system, a hole in the roof and a busted water chiller.

The cost of these would-be repairs, after Gov. Rick Scott vetoed roughly $12 million in funding for UF Thursday, would not come out of state funds.

Instead, the university will have to somehow foot the bill.

“We might have to make some very tough decisions,” said UF spokeswoman Janine Sikes.

Scott vetoed a record $615 million dollars from the state budget before signing it, including about $5.3 million for routine maintenance and repairs at UF and $500,000 for a statewide brain tumor research program based at the McKnight Brain Institute.

The veto includes $6 million for a research and academic facility at Lake Nona in Orlando – a project that has already broken ground.
