Golden will keep medical professorship after email disparaging whites, English speakers, Christians
A Johns Hopkins University diversity officer just resigned from the position after facing backlash for an email describing white, Christian, and English-speaking people as privileged.
Dr. Sherita Golden (pictured) will leave her role as chief diversity officer of Johns Hopkins Medicine and join the faculty as a diabetes researcher instead, the school announced Tuesday, according to the Baltimore Fishbowl.
The announcement did not mention Golden’s email disparaging people of “privilege,” which drew widespread criticism in January, the Fishbowl reports. Golden later retracted and apologized for the email.
Johns Hopkins Medicine CEO Dr. Theodore DeWeese and President Kevin Sowers praised Golden in the announcement Tuesday.
“She has been a valuable member of the Johns Hopkins Medicine leadership team, and, like many of you, we wanted her to stay in her role, but we respect her decision,” they said in a joint statement.
In the role, the administrators said Golden “helped lead Johns Hopkins Medicine’s work in healthy equity and access during the COVID-19 pandemic” and “advanced diversity, inclusion and health equity initiatives for the medical school,” as well as “worked to expand recruitment and retention of a more diverse workforce,” according to the report.
She will continue to serve as a professor of endocrinology and metabolism, the report states.
In January, Golden sent an email to employees with a list of people who she deemed to be privileged, The College Fix reported.
These included: white people, Christians, English-speaking people, able-bodied people, heterosexuals, cisgender people, middle or owning class people, and middle-aged people, according to screenshots of the email obtained by the X account End Wokeness.
Her email stated that “privileges are unearned and are granted to people in the dominant groups whether they want that privilege or not, and regardless of their stated intent.”
After backlash online, Golden apologized for her “overly simplistic and poorly worded” email, The Fix reported.
A Johns Hopkins Medicine spokesperson also issued a statement to The National Desk in January, saying Golden’s email “contradicts the values of Johns Hopkins as an institution.”
