Napping Station Gives Overworked University of Michigan Students Some Quick Shut-Eye

Staying up all night studying for your Marxism midterm? The University of Michigan is running a “napping station” pilot, the Ann Arbor News reports:

When Adrian Bazbaz transferred from a college in Mexico to University of Michigan, one thing struck him: how late students stayed up studying in the library.

“I wasn’t used to that at all. It was super late and so many people were there,” he recalls. “Sleep deprivation is bad for your health and overall performance.”

He worked with the student government to set up the napping station during finals week:

The station has six cots and lockers for students to stow their belongings as they sleep. It’s on the first floor of the library, where staff are working 24-7.

“The students seem to like it. It’s very simple set up,” said Stephen Griffes, an operations supervisor at the Shapiro library who worked with students to set up the station. “It’s had a much larger positive response than we anticipated.”

The pilot continues through spring, summer and fall semesters, and another is being considered for UM’s North Campus.
