Penn State Students Are Trying to Crowdfund a Trip to the Moon

BroBible.com reports:

If a group of students and faculty in State College have their way, the list of countries to send manned or unmanned vehicles to the moon will include: the United States, the Soviet Union, China, and Penn State. Just Penn State. Thanks to a project called Lunar Lion, which is a crowdfunded effort to win Google’s Lunar X-Prize, Penn State wants to become the first-ever non-governmental entity to go to the moon.

It won’t be easy. To win the prize, the Penn Staters have to build an unmanned craft capable of traveling 500 meters on or above the moon’s surface and sending back two broadcast transmissions. If they succeed, they’re awarded $40 million from Google and the honor of building a lunar vessel. …

As of this morning, Penn State had raised $19,600 of its $406,536 goal. (Fun fact: 406,536 represents the number of kilometers between the earth and the moon.) If you donate more than $100, your name will be etched onto the spacecraft hardware. Beats a t-shirt.
