Warned parents and incoming students about ‘this campus issue’
Ellie Johnson has continually trashed Indiana University-Bloomington for a month, saying it mishandled her reported rape and mistreats others who report sexual violations.
It appears to have cost the outspoken Twitter activist and subject of the hashtag #WeStandWithEllie her job at the public university.
Johnson claimed she was fired as a resident assistant earlier this month “for genuinely caring about the well-being of my residents” and “doing everything in my power to keep them safe. IU is trying to shut me up.”
She cited a string of Facebook posts and tweets the university allegedly cited as grounds for terminating her, including her practice of contacting “parents and incoming students to make them aware of this campus issue” and “planning a protest and asking for the welcome week schedule.”
IUB told the Indiana Daily Student that Johnson had been offered a “change of responsibilities” in a new campus position, and was not “in any way” fired as an RA. Spokesperson Chuck Carney said her public statements suggested she couldn’t fulfill her RA duties. She told the Daily she accepted the new job.
Johnson had filed a Title IX complaint against the university with the Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights two days before she announced she had been fired, according to the Daily.
In a Facebook post she said she’s looking to amend her federal complaint to include “retaliation” by the university for her activism, or file a new one with the new allegation.
Johnson is getting her own retaliation in a way, hosting a “Shatter the Silence” march and rally during “Welcome Week” next month to protest the university’s handling of sexual-misconduct reports.
The Student Association is backing her event, saying sexual-misconduct reporting rules and procedures are “complex and oftentimes misunderstood” and the process needs to “protect all survivors.” The statement did not mention protections for students accused of violations.
Johnson met with the university’s general counsel Jackie Simmons last week and told her Twitter audience they made “minuscule” progress, discussing an extension of the appeal period for losing parties in Title IX cases.
Simmons allegedly told Johnson she couldn’t serve on sexual-misconduct hearing panels because “you’ve been through the process.” Johnson accused her of not being “transparent at all” after learning that Johnson was precluded from serving because she’s not a graduate student, not because she’s gone through the process.
