Princeton University has taken aggressive measures to combat a dangerous outbreak of bacterial meningitis after eight students were infected. The university has imported vaccines from Europe to fight a special b-strain of the virus, against which the current U.S. version of the vaccine does not protect.
Bacterial meningitis is more dangerous than the more common viral meningitis. According to the CDC, bacterial meningitis can cause serious harm in some cases, including “brain damage, hearing loss, or learning disabilities.”
Princeton will being administering the European vaccine to students on a voluntary basis and free of charge, starting December 9th.
