Professor: Mayan Doomsday’s Not the Threat, Humans Are

On Dec. 21, the world will either keep spinning or be destroyed by a humongous asteroid or some other catastrophe. The Mayan calendar ends that day, creating massive doomsday speculations and scenarios.

Not to worry, said Christian Wells, an associate professor of anthropology at the University of South Florida, the world isn’t going to come to an end – at least not that way.

Wells gave a speech recently on the background and hype surrounding the calendar’s end, chronicled in the student newspaper The Oracle. In the end, he quipped, the biggest threat to Earth in 2012 was “the human race itself.”

Yeah, we get that a lot.
