Professors play practical joke, spread rumor of meat ban

Students at Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts, spent last week groaning, cheering, protesting, celebrating, and worrying about the college’s plan to ban all non-vegetarian, non-local food options. But the ban is facing one big hurdle–it doesn’t exist, and never did.

Two professors, Jay Garfield and Jim Henle, instructed their introductory logic class to spread the rumor as an experiment. The pair are responsible for spreading a number of hoaxes over the years: that all male professors would be fired, that the college would merge with Mount Holyoke College.

“It wasn’t even drug-assisted,’’ Garfield told The Boston Globe. “We’re just brilliant and slightly weird.’’
