Quidditch team grounded by NYU Ministry of Athletics

Gravity isn’t the only force keeping the NYU Quidditch Club out of the air.

Despite efforts to gain university recognition, the Quidditch Club has been denied official club status by both the Coles Sports Center and the Center for Student Activities, Leadership and Service.

When the group approached Coles for approval, they were told that Quidditch did not qualify as a sport and was recommended to contact the Center of Student Activities. But Bob Butler, executive director of the center for student activities, told the group that Quidditch does not fall under the purview of their offices.

“The proposed Quidditch Club appears to be a club that would engage students in a competitive and recreational athletic activity, so they would first need to be recognized by NYU Department of Athletics, Intramurals and Recreation, who would provide them with funding,” Butler said.
When asked about the Quidditch Club, an anonymous woman on behalf of Coles said, “It is a fantasy sport and is not noteworthy.”

The club is nevertheless determined to bring Quidditch to NYU. Last Friday, it held an information session for fellow NYU Quidditch enthusiasts.

“Quidditch is a very equipment-heavy sport. You need multiple balls, broomsticks and goalposts,” said Tisch sophomore and NYU Quidditch Club officer Lizzy Denning. “Finding practice space is another issue. Simply getting the basic things we need to play Quidditch is our primary concern as of now.”
