Rick Scott seeks job-placement data from state universities

Gov. Rick Scott’s having quite the month when it comes to higher education in the state of Florida. Scott has sent a letter to each of the state’s 11 university presidents with 17 questions about how successful the institutions are in preparing students for the job market.

Questions include:

  • Do you have measurable goals for each graduate in the areas of writing proficiency and critical thinking? If so, please send them to me with the goals and include the results for the last five to ten years.
  • Do you have measurable goals to meet employers’ current needs?
  • What are the core subjects every undergraduate must complete prior to graduation?
  • Please send me a job description, total wages, number of courses instructed, and measurable goals for the fifty highest paid employees for each of the last three years.

Last week, Scott talked about increasing the number of STEM degrees (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) in the state. He also pissed off a number of anthropologists, noting, “Is it a vital interest of the state to have more anthropologists? I don’t think so.”

Scott’s plans to shift the focus and funding of degree programs in the state is part of his promised big reforms to the state’s education programs, modeled on Gov. Rick Perry’s reforms in Texas. In addition to the types of education students are receiving, Scott is looking at introducing tenure-limits and merit-pay for faculty.
