‘Socialist’ student group protests campus event honoring law enforcement

Group refuses to ‘place police lives on a sacrificial pyre’

An event at California State University Fullerton was targeted by a reputedly socialist student group for being “problematic,” with activists handing out flyers explaining that “Black and Brown civilians” do not want to elevate police officers’ lives above their own.

The university’s student Republicans group hosted Law Enforcement Appreciation Day this week as “a way to come together as humans to say thank you to fallen heroes,” according to a press release from the group.

The event, which hosted several university police officers and offered students a chance “to tie ribbons with names of fallen officers on a wooden frame,” was intended to “open up a dialogue with people” and “show the human aspect” of law enforcement, the school newspaper Daily Titan reported.

The memorial, however, was targeted by the campus student group Students for a Quality Education, which the California State University Fullteron Republicans called “a socialist organization funded by the California Faculty Association.” Members of that group stood nearby handing out flyers titled “Why Blue Lives Matter is Problematic.”

“Black and Brown civilians do not want to place police lives on a sacrificial pyre in exchange for their own,” the flyers read, in part.

Is is unclear how honoring law enforcement would “place police lives on a sacrificial pyre.”

The group refused to comment to a reporter from the Daily Titan.

A flyer on the Students for a Quality Education Facebook feed, which appears to be the same material the group passed out at the law enforcement event, states that “‘Blue Lives Matter’ creates a situation wherein Black civilians are a hostile enemy and a false equivalence wherein born, inescapable racial tensions are tantamount to the chosen profession of ‘police officer’.”

On its Facebook page, the group identifies itself as “a coalition of students fighting for equitable & affordable education.”

“The more we pay the longer we stay,” the group writes on the page. “Join us in the fight against privatization and elitism present in the CSU administration. Education is for all. THE STUDENTS UNITED WILL NEVER BE DIVIDED!!!”
