They say it takes just as much faith – and probably more – for atheists not to believe in God as it does for the religious to believe in God, so perhaps it’s fitting that atheist students will take part today in the Interfaith and Community Service Campus Challenge meeting in Washington D.C.
“An unlikely party will be sitting at the table when the United States Department of Education hosts its interfaith initiative: atheists,” reports Secular Student Alliance, which was invited to the meeting taking place at Georgetown University. “The planning session, which also includes organizations like Hillel, Campus Compacts, and the Hindu Seva Charities, aims to determine the best ways for campus service projects to include all worldviews.”
But it’s raised some eyebrows.
“Traditionally, an ‘interfaith’ meeting would mandate that some sort of ‘faith’ be present by all parties, but that is no longer the case with the Obama administration,” writes Christine Rousselle in Townhall.com. “While it is curious that an organization that explicitly denies the existence of faith would be invited to an ‘interfaith’ meeting, it is hardly the Obama administration’s first outreach to those lacking any belief in a higher power. Atheists were present at a 2010 ‘interfaith discussion’ at the White House, which prompted criticism from religious leaders.”
