U.S. CCR chairman: Letter from two commissioners ‘doesn’t represent the Commission’

Back on February 28, The College Fix reported on a letter sent to members of Congress from two members of the US Commission on Civil Rights, Pete Kirsanow and Gail Heriot.

Their letter urged Congress to reject a requested thirty-one percent budget increase for the Education Department’s Office for Civil Rights.

Now, Commission Chairman Martin R. Castro has responded with a letter to the same congressmen noting that Kirsanow and Heriot “[do] not represent the official position of the Commission,” and points out that “statements made on behalf of the Commission and expressing Commission opinion require a majority vote.”

The letter continues:

The letter submitted on Commission letterhead on February 26, 2015, was not presented to the Commission body for a vote, and, therefore, does not represent the position of the Commission on the President’s proposal. The letter should not be given the weight of the position of the Commission as a whole.
