William & Mary professor pleads guilty to child porn charges

Former William & Mary economics professor Justin May has pled guilty to child pornography charges, and now faces a minimum of 15 years in federal prison, and a maximum of 30 years, in accordance with U.S. law. He will be sentenced January 25th.

May’s plea pertained to one particular incident. May, 34, admitted to the court that he had coerced a 13-year-old Ohio girl to send him naked photographs of herself to him over the internet.

May met her on a modeling talent search website, under the alias “Nikki.” May told the girl that he could arrange to have professional photos taken of her in exchange for having sex with him. According to his statements and court records, May promised to arrange “300 pictures of her for anal sex, or 75 pictures for oral sex.”

Since May’s arrest earlier this year, other details of potential sexual impropriety have surfaced.

As reported on by The Informer in the August 25th issue, Mr. May might have been involved in criminal bestiality activity as well.

An email traced back to May links him to a “pet lovers” internet forum, where in the some of the darker parts of the site he is cited as a credible source for information on having sex with dogs. His Facebook profile, before it was deactivated, showed him to be a member of several dog appreciation groups.

According to a source, May was dating a woman at the time of his arrest; the extent and seriousness of their relationship is not clear, but she has since his arrest ended the relationship.

“Broadly speaking, I think he was a great professor,” said one of May’s former major advisees, who spoke on the condition of anonymity. “I’ve only spoken to students that have loved him. I was actually working on a Fulbright proposal with him, he was extremely helpful.”

May has a book due to be published sometime in 2010, titled “Jump Down, Turn Around, Pick A Bale of…Poverty?”

“I had dinner with him twice in the weeks before the arrest,” the student said. “There was no indication that anything like this was going on.”

May will be sentenced January 25, 2011.
