U. of West Florida: ‘We sincerely apologize’ for wrongly derecognizing College Republicans

The University of West Florida is backing away from its claim that the school’s College Republicans chapter got itself “disabled” as a recognized club by missing application deadlines, not because it was the victim of political discrimination.

In an email statement sent to The College Fix Friday night, spokesperson Megan Gonzalez said the university “discovered” hours earlier that

during preparation for the renewal process, an administrative error occurred. On Aug. 15, 2016, an email was sent to all disabled student organizations which was pulled from a database that contained the previous year’s organizational leadership listed in the student organization portal. The error occurred in that the new contact information from all disabled student organizations had not been transferred to the system in which the email was deployed.

Gonzalez had previously shown The Fix an Aug. 14 email reminding clubs of the pending deadlines for club renewal and a mandatory student leadership workshop. It went to the CRs’ listed adviser and “primary contact,” who were soon replaced by new officials.

Gonzalez’s new message continues:

Due to this error, University Commons and Student Involvement will immediately reinstate the registered status of the College Republicans and will work with the organization to provide information missed as a result of the administrative error.

We sincerely apologize for the complications this error caused.
