When Pitzer College students recently sought financial support from their student government to start up a “Yacht Club,” the proposal was rejected, with campus leaders saying the term “yacht” is “offensive” and the sport too “exclusive.”
Now the students who attempted to form the club are turning to the kindness of strangers to help them set sail, in part because after their situation was reported on by national news outlets, many reached out to the group seeking to help, Jordan Fox, a senior at Pitzer and the student leading the charge, explains on their indiegogo campaign.
“Thus we have ended up here,” Fox writes. “We realized that with this much notoriety we had an opportunity to enable students at Pitzer College to learn about sailing, as well as to dedicate our group to a good cause. That is why we would like to raise $2,000 for a one time Pitzer Yacht Club Sailing trip that would be open to the student body and to donate any proceeds beyond the $2,000 to the local Southern Californian Boys and Girls Clubs.”
As of Sunday night, $630 had been donated.
