Pro-life group also subjected to spitting and theft
A pro-abortion professor canceled classes at Albion College so his students could protest a display by Students for Life of America.
Some students, although it is unclear if they came from the canceled class, also spat on the pro-life organizers and stole their materials. The national pro-life group alleges the head of security looked on and refused to intervene during the April 14 event.
Students for Life reports on their website:
One young man attempted to steal a handful of our flags while the university’s head of security stood by without stopping him. It took Students for Life staff threatening to call the police for the man to drop the flags. Another student spit on our table and topic cards. Still other protesters brandished signs reading, “Abortion is a Rigt” and “Seperate church and state.” (Clearly, spelling was not their strong suit).
The police only took an interest – in order to have the organizers removed from what they say is a piece of public property near the private college.
The pro-life group reported further:
When the mob reached its peak of about 25-30 people, the professor grew more aggressive and disrespectful and the whole crowd grew angrier. But instead of doing something about the protesters, the head of security instead informed us that we had to leave because our discussion was “no longer productive.“
We stood our ground, pointing out that the protesters were the agitators, not us, and that the university had no authority to make us leave since we were on public property.
Meanwhile the campus newspaper reported a variety of responses to the club, with many students complaining about the pro-life group’s presence. The Albion Pleiad also corroborated reports of theft at the display.
The Pleiad reported on how the display upset a student named Tuesday McBride.
“I’m hoping I don’t have to see this bulls— again,” McBride told the student newspaper.
“I hope stuff like this isn’t allowed to continue,” McBride complained. “It’s really hard to see hateful stuff like this literally in the middle of our dining hall.”
The display is a “disgrace,” according to another pro-abortion student.
“The work that we’ve been trying to push out says that abortion should be the woman’s choice,” Jay Booker, with Students for Reproductive Justice, told the newspaper.
Another student said that her mom and uncle would not have been born without abortion.
“If the procedures that are considered abortion were not made legal, my mom would not have been born, and neither would my uncle,” Trinity Castle-Pollard said.
The student also said the pro-life group is spreading “dangerous” information that is going to make people “scared.”
Director for the Anna Howard Shaw Center for Gender Equity and Victim Advocacy Lisa Winchell-Caldwell also complained to the student newspaper.
“I support all (students) in having accurate information,” Winchell-Caldwell said. “I don’t feel like strangers coming on campus with inflammatory materials is productive discourse.”
On other hand, Morgan Reece, the Michigan Regional Coordinator who set up the display, criticized campus security’s response.
“Without reprimanding or even cautioning the protesters, the officers informed our staff we had to leave,” she wrote for her employer’s website. “Obviously, having the audacity to withstand spitting, attempted theft, and mob-swarming is an offense worthy of being removed from public property.”
The April 14 mob occurred just weeks after another controversy on campus.
As reported today by The College Fix, someone spraypainted a rock on campus with messages such as “Jesus” and “Only 2 genders,” and caused an uproar.
The painting covered up previous messages placed on the rock March 31 for “Trans Day of Visibility.”
The college is currently investigating the situation as “discriminatory harassment,” The Fix reported.
