Amanda Knox to Face Retrial for Murder

Former University of Washington student Amanda Knox became the focus of a high profile murder investigation after her study abroad roommate, Meredith Kercher, was killed in the Perugia, Italy apartment they shared.

Knox was eventually convicted in a sensationalized and highly controversial trial in Italian courts. She was released from prison and returned to the U.S. after spending two years behind bars due to concerns over contaminated DNA evidence used in her trial. Fellow convict in the case Raffaele Sollecito was also released at the time.

A third suspect, Rudy Guede, a native of Ivory Coast who was living in Perugia at the time and whose bloody fingerprints were found at the scene of the crime is currently serving a 16-year sentence in connection with Kercher’s murder.

Knox’s attorneys say she will not return to Italy for the retrial. And the U.S. is unlikely to extradite her.

Knox released a statement through her attorneys:

“I believe that any questions as to my innocence must be examined by an objective investigation and a capable prosecution.

‘The prosecution responsible for the many discrepancies in their work must be made to answer for them, for Raffaele’s sake, my sake, and most especially for the sake of Meredith’s family.”
