An X post from Fr. Patrick Hyde; @frpatrickOP

The Catholic on-campus community “rallied” behind a fellow student facing an unplanned pregnancy, according to a touching story shared by the Indiana University chaplain.

Fr. Patrick Hyde recently shared the story about how Catholic students, and himself, helped the mom choose life more than five years ago. The Dominican priest posted the story on X to celebrate the child’s fifth birthday.

He wrote:

When Harper was conceived, her parents were in college & unmarried. To make matters more difficult, Harper’s Mom was encouraged by all but her 2 closest Catholic friends to abort & move on. Her Catholic friends were the only ones who offered support beyond “Get an abortion.” They dove in head first to support a vulnerable mom. When Mom didn’t know to whom she could turn, they sent her to me. During our meeting on the first day of Mom’s senior year, Mom chose life in my office. When Mom finally told our Catholic community, they rallied to her support.

Hyde said the support for those in need grew out of the campus ministry’s goal to help students “know Jesus, to know who they are and whose they are.”

“A few years after we got going, someone who our ministry formed entered this Mom’s life,” he wrote on X. “When everyone else was against life, that woman was only one with Mom and on the side of life.”
