One of the supposed “leading intellectual voices in the country” took to Twitter Thursday to indicate how he felt about a MAGA (Make America Great Again) hat-wearing teenager being assaulted by an angry (and adult) progressive activist.
Temple University’s Marc Lamont Hill responded with three “crying laughing” emojis to a Twitter user’s comment “Wish I could take the high road. But your MAGA hat reads like a swastika to me. So ummm … hmmm. Yeah. Maybe I’m no longer a decent person.”
Hill, the “hip hop professor” and perennial cable news talking head currently with CNN, later attempted to clarify his response:
I actually don’t advocate throwing drinks on people. Not at all. But yes, i think MAGA hats (deliberately) reflect a movement that conjures racism, homophobia, xenophobia, etc. So yes, it’s a little harder to feel sympathy when someone gets Coca Cola thrown on him. https://t.co/ASlATau2PF

Of course, no one was asking Hill to feel sympathy. Then again, assailant Kino Jimenez is a beefy adult who had confronted young teen Hunter Richard just because of his hat. It’s a sure thing that Professor Hill would have responded quite differently had Richard been, say, a young black boy with a “Change You Can Believe In” hat, and the attacker a 30-year-old yammering about Barack Obama’s left-wing politics.

Hill would be on CNN in a picosecond blasting some conservative pundit’s tweet which had read “I actually don’t advocate throwing drinks on people. Not at all. But yes, I think CYCBI hats (deliberately) reflect a movement that conjures the brutalities of communism, anti-white racism, radical authoritarianism, etc.” (Hill would particularly be upset with the second item on that list; blacks cannot be racist, according to him.)
Alas, the prof is quite well known for uttering dopey things. During the 2015 Baltimore riots the prof brushed away the notion that there are (were) only a few “bad apple” cops in that city’s police force, likening the entire department to “an occupying force in the hood.”
In January of last year, he referred to blacks who met with then-President-Elect Trump as “mediocre Negroes.” He also made fun of former New Jersey governor Chris Christie in 2010 as being too fat to win the presidency, and said (seemingly without a trace of irony) that Sarah Palin was an example of “image over substance.” (Hello? Barack Obama anyone??)
Even further back the “brave” Dr. Hill mocked then-teenager Miley Cyrus in 2008 by stating “No 15-year-old loves Jesus that much,” and said he “did not know” whether Louis Farrakhan is a racist and anti-Semite.
