DOJ says he also possessed an illegal firearm

An illegal immigrant who is accused of murdering a Loyola University Chicago student did not have legitimate claims to asylum, according to documents released by the House Judiciary Committee.

State officials charged Jose Medina-Medina with the brutal killing of Sheridan Gorman, an 18-year-old freshman, in mid-March. He allegedly killed Gorman in the early hours of March 19 as the freshman was hanging out with friends on a Lake Michigan beach near the Catholic university’s north side of Chicago campus.

The Department of Justice has since filed an illegal firearm charge against the migrant.

The suspected killer remained in the country despite Border Patrol determining in 2023 that he did not fear violence in his home country of Venezuela, new internal documents show.

“The subject was asked and responded that they do not fear harm or persecution should they return to their native country,” the Border Patrol report reads.

Officials also determined Medina was “likely to abscond,” according to the documents.

His next court date for the state-level charge is today.

He also now faces a federal firearm charge.“Chicago Police officers discovered the firearm during a court-authorized search of his residence in the Rogers Park neighborhood on Chicago’s North Side,” the DOJ announced on April 2.

A federal prosecutor said it is important to pursue this charge so Medina does not have any chance of being “released back into our community.”

“Given the senseless, cold-blooded nature of the murder of a young student with a bright future ahead of her, the Chicago U.S. Attorney’s Office will take no chances that this illegal alien perpetrator will be released back into our community,” U.S. Attorney Andrew Boutros stated.

He stated further:

The Chicago U.S. Attorney’s Office applauds the excellent work of the Chicago Police Department and Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office to quickly identify, apprehend, and charge the culprit and hold him accountable for the murder in state court.

Our Office will be ready to move forward with the federal charge as needed.

Meanwhile, the Loyola Phoenix has come under fire for its coverage of the murder.

As first reported by The College Fix, the editorial team at the student newspaper amended an Instagram post and story and apologized for using the term “illegal immigrant.”

The newspaper subsequently referred to Medina as a “Rogers Park Resident.”

The change drew national criticism, with Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) condemning the decision during a Senate committee hearing.
